FAQ

Quick answers to the questions people ask me most.

Who are you?

I'm Muhammad Haseeb: a software engineer, indie builder, and lifelong student of how things work. By day I'm a Principal Software Engineer at Xref, where I lead backend architecture for a global HR-tech platform. Outside work I build small products, AI tools and experiments.

Where are you based?

I live and work in Sydney, Australia. That's my home city and country.

What do you do at work?

I lead backend architecture at Xref, a global HR-tech platform: AWS infrastructure (Lambda, API Gateway, RDS, SQS, SNS), the standards the team ships with, and mentoring engineers. I've been at Xref since 2022, first as a Full Stack Engineer, then a Senior Engineer, and now as Principal Software Engineer.

Are you open to new work?

Yes. If you're hiring, I'm open to hearing about a new job: full-time roles, freelance and consulting projects, advising startups and mentoring engineers, and collaborating on side projects. The best way to start a conversation is to email me at hello@muhammadhaseeb.me with a few lines about what you have in mind.

Where did you study?

I graduated from the University of Central Punjab in Lahore in 2018. My degree is a Bachelor of Computer Science.

Have you founded a company?

Yes. I founded HireBolt, a recruiting platform, which was acquired in 2023. I also build and launch my own products, like SalahMate and StandupMonkey.

How many years of experience do you have?

More than 7 years. I've been shipping backend systems since 2018, at Arbisoft, Squibler and Xref.

What are you building right now?

SalahMate, a free prayer tracker for Android with prayer times, habit logging, streaks, circles and a smart Fajr alarm; and Pico, a local-first AI buddy for the Mac that runs on Apple Intelligence. I also shipped BreakReminder, a macOS menu bar app for eye breaks.

What's your tech stack?

Mostly Python, Django, AWS, Postgres, TypeScript and React, plus LLMs. For my Mac apps I use Swift, SwiftUI and AppKit. The full list is on my experience page.

What do you write about?

Building useful products, designing reliable systems, and learning through shipping. I write on my newsletter, byhaseeb on Substack, which I started in October 2026.

Do you still write on Medium?

No. My earlier articles are still on Medium, some published in Python in Plain English and Stackademic, covering backend engineering, Python and Django, system design, AI and LLMs, and career growth for software engineers. I don't post there anymore; new writing goes to Substack.

Do you have a newsletter?

Yes, byhaseeb on Substack. Subscribe there to get new essays by email.

What do you do for fun outside of work?

I experiment with AI agents and AI-powered products, 3D print things and design physical products, and try to ship more than I plan.

Is this chat really you?

It's an AI that answers as me, using only what I've written on this site. It can get things wrong, so for anything important, email me at hello@muhammadhaseeb.me.

How can I support your work?

If something I built was useful, you can buy me a coffee.

How do I get in touch?

Email me at hello@muhammadhaseeb.me, or find me on GitHub and LinkedIn.
